When Sojourner Truth started selling her autobiography, she captioned every photograph of herself with, “I sell the shadow to support the substance.”
Photography was a new technology in Truth’s time, yet she (and Frederick Douglass) already knew the power of pictures to connect people through space and time. Living 150 years ago, Truth has improved our attitude towards using Instagram to share more of who we are and what we believe in. Facing intense misogyny and bigotry, she always retained her dignity and took advantage of every opportunity available. This month and forever more, we’re grateful for Sojourner Truth’s conviction and boldness.
